CELLULAR TELEPHONE AND ELECTRONIC SIGNALING DEVICES
Student possession and use of cellular phones and other electronic signaling devices (devices) on school grounds, at school-sponsored activities, and while under the supervision and control of a District employee is a privilege that is permitted only under the circumstances described herein.
At no time may a student operate a device in a locker room, bathroom, or any location where operation of the device may violate the privacy rights of another person. A student may use a device on school grounds:
-
before school begins and after school ends;
-
for students in grades 7-12, during the lunch period; and
-
in the classroom if the use is for educational purposes and is consented to by the teacher or an administrator.
A student may use a device at school-sponsored activities or while under the supervision of a District employee if consented to by the activity sponsor or supervising employee. The District is not responsible for lost, misplaced, stolen, or damaged devices.
Unauthorized use of such devices disrupts the instructional program and distracts from the learning environment. Therefore, unauthorized use is grounds for confiscation of the device by school officials, including classroom teachers. Confiscated devices will be returned to the parent or guardian. Repeated unauthorized use of such devices will result in disciplinary action. (See District Policy 3630.)
